About Sandra: Professional: Dr. Lapham is a board-certified specialist in internal and addiction medicine. She received a medical degree from Wayne State University and trained in internal medicine at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her graduate training includes a Master's Degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and service in the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the Center for Disease Control. She is a fellow of the American Board of Addiction Medicine and is a clinical associate of the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine, in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Her research has focused on such areas as interventions for substance-abusing populations; computerized assessments aimed at improving health in special populations (e.g. pregnant women, adolescents, impaired drivers); methods for screening, treating, and sanctioning convicted impaired-driving offenders; implementation of opiate replacement treatment programs; testing new pharmaceuticals in addiction medicine; workplace substance abuse prevention; active living research, developing programs to help people bring their lives into balance; and substance abuse policy research. She has been principal investigator for numerous grants and contracts and has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications.
Personal: Partner, Tom Prettyman, nuclear engineer and planetary scientist. Two daughters, Cassandra, a doctor of veterinary medicine practicing in Las Cruces NM and El Paso TX; Courtney, a 4th year med student at the UNM School of Medicine, plans a career in emergency medicine. Two dogs: Cobain, a Lhasa apso, and Sargeant Loki, a mutt. Main interests: outdoor sports (hiking, cycling, skiing), photography, ballroom dancing, adventure travel, writing.
